Clarke Penman is committed to high quality contemporary design, specialising principally in delivering bespoke residential projects with a high level of service. Other sectors such as multiple unit residential, bespoke retail and hotel developments are also covered. The practice’s design focus places emphasis on the relationship between the building and its surroundings, a considered material palette and quality of light.
Martyn Clarke and Richard Penman, the practice Directors, combine experience from all sectors of the built environment to help deliver outstanding project results through dedicated client service. Martyn established Martyn Clarke Architecture in 2003. Richard joined him in 2015 and the practice transitioned to Clarke Penman in 2017.
The practice has an excellent understanding of local planning procedures. Most projects, by their nature, are in conservation areas and some are listed buildings, where planning requirements can be onerous. Clarke Penman navigates through the planning process to take the stress out of statutory regulations and planning permission.
Their approach is intimate and responsive to clients. Martyn and Richard work closely with clients to understand their needs and use their expertise to deliver creative and practical solutions. All projects are actively managed from inception to completion and handing over of the finished building or space.
Martyn has over 30 years of architectural experience and is a Chartered Member of the RIBA, graduating from Manchester Polytechnic in 1985. His early career was spent predominantly in the retail sector, projects included the refurbishment of Liberty on Regent Street and large-scale masterplanning projects in Rotterdam and Vienna. Martyn worked in architectural practice for Fitch, BDP, Greig and Stephenson and before setting up his own business, was Head of Architecture for retail design company 20:20.
Since 1999, Martyn has specialised in residential design and established Martyn Clarke Architecture in 2003, which transitioned to Clarke Penman in 2017.
Richard has international architecture and project management experience, working on high-end schemes including many for luxury brands. He graduated from London Metropolitan University in 2011, and has travelled and worked in several countries since. He worked in Paris, for Architecture Studio, specialising in the health sector, in the US delivering Stella McCartney flagship stores whilst working for Angus Pond Architecture in London, and Europe-wide whilst working on Ralph Lauren’s European/US roll-out of the brand Club Monaco. Richard began working with Martyn in 2015 and became co-owner director of Clarke Penman in 2017.
Martyn and Richard are supported by a highly motivated team of young architects. In some cases running their own projects, in others collaborating with a director.
